Youth Association for Conservation of Nature and Environment- YASCON commends the department of forestry for working tirelessly in fighting against charcoal trafficking.

The Youth Association for Conservation of Nature and Environment (YASCON) commends the Department of Forestry and the Financial Crimes Division of the High Court for taking firm action against illegal charcoal trafficking.

The forfeiture of a 12-tonne truck and 157 bags of illegal charcoal on the 10th of July 2026 sends a strong message that crimes against our forests have consequences.

While enforcement remains essential, lasting change depends on addressing the root causes of illegal charcoal production. Malawi must continue investing in environmental education, community forestry, sustainable livelihoods, and access to affordable clean energy.

Protecting our forests protects our biodiversity, water sources, climate resilience, and the future of generations to come.

YASCON remains committed to mobilising young people to conserve, restore, and protect Malawi’s natural environment.
