TOWARDS A 30-MILLION-TREE TARGET BY 2030
YOUTH POWER IN PHALOMBE AS 79 MEMBERS OF THE JENALA YOUTH NETWORK PREPARE LAND AND DIG HOLES TO RESTORE VULNERABLE RIVERBANKS, TURNING FLOOD RISKS INTO A GREENER, SAFER FUTURE WHILE DRIVING YASCON’S 30‑MILLION‑TREES‑BY‑2030 VISION.
As part of YASCON’s national vision of planting 30 million trees by 2030 across all districts in Malawi, our District Coordinator for Phalombe, Dalitso Mathiya, recently engaged local young leaders in a crucial land preparation and hole-digging exercise aimed at restoring vulnerable riverbanks and safeguarding communities.
The initiative brought together 79 active youths from the Jenala Youth Network, which unites 19 youth clubs across T/A Jenala. The team targets a total area of approximately 700m × 700m along Phalombe River in the area of Group Village Headman Chimombo. To date, the dedicated youths have cleared 120m × 70m of land and prepared planting holes, setting the stage for the upcoming tree-planting drive. The site in GVH Chimombo was intentionally selected due to its history of severe seasonal flooding. Every rainy season, Phalombe River overflows its banks, causing tragic loss of life, displacement, and widespread destruction.
By establishing a strong green buffer along the riverbanks, these young environmental champions are tackling flood risks head-on while directly contributing to the 30-million-Trees-by-2030 national target. The exceptional coordination, enthusiasm, and active involvement demonstrated by the Jenala Youth Network serve as a powerful reminder of the vital role youth play in environmental conservation and climate resilience.
